CATHERINE FINN

CATHERINE FINN

Cat Finn is a multimedia artist from Buffalo, New York. Primary focused on oil painting, Cat enjoys creating vast landscapes that act as portals into the psyche. Her landscapes often reflect her background from Upstate New York and act as a reaction to her newfound urban life. To her, paintings are meant to create a dialogue between the artist and viewer. It is important for Cat to depict scenes from her own memories that are vaguely familiar to people with similar backgrounds, acting as a catalyst for conversation.

Artist Statement

I chose to make my thesis about the importance of the journey rather than the destination. I got this idea while driving around my hometown as I often enjoy driving by myself as a means of therapy. It is a unique time in between destinations where I can be by myself. I started to think about the views I experienced on my many road trips, the moments shared with other people, as well as those I’ve spent driving alone. My paintings act as an ode to all these special times- based on photography as well as memories. I find that the memory can be like a camera in a way, often like an old film roll. Movements are caught, some things are blurry, while other parts are exceptionally clear. The shared experience of gazing out car windows allows us to tap into our humanity and it is truly what I find special about these paintings. My priority is to capture a glimpse into a memory that most people find to be somewhat familiar.

This project is important because the primary message is for people to embrace the moment wherever they are. My use of an expansive sky is meant to invoke thoughts about how our lives expand from the road in which we are all grounded on. The sky and the road’s unity relate to the marriage of thought and physicality that often takes place during long drives. The road going off into the distance of my paintings indicates an unknown destination, leading the viewer to create their own conclusions as to where it leads. My collection of paintings is meant to display how simple yet beautiful individual moments can pile up onto each other to create the narrative that is life.
