RUKAIAH EL

RUKAIAH EL

I’m a fine artist, specializing in painting portraits with vibrant neon and fluorescent colors to grab one’s attention. My experiments with portraying people of color devoid of color also play into my tendency to play with instances of duality; pain and pleasure, “right” and “wrong”, grace and clumsiness. I like to challenge viewers to expand their understanding of privilege and understand how my experiences have made me feel and process the world around me. I paint to encourage and inspire other Black artists to pursue their dreams of visual arts in a world where monetary benefits are valued over talent.

Artist Statement

Foundations (I Am My Own Muse” explores multiple themes, including primary colors, cognitive reflection, and duality. My senior thesis painting is a multi-self portrait whose dimensions are 60”x42”. The painting consists of 22 smaller canvases, varying in sizes from as small as 6”x6” to as large as 16”x20” and 8”x24”. Each canvas is one of three primary colors; red, blue, and yellow. I enjoy primary colors and have previously worked on a painting exclusively with primary colors but on a smaller scale. I have been using my color theory skills and challenging myself with filtering colors through painting with this atypical color palette.

Details of what I admire most about art are reflected in this painting. On top of primary colors, especially the color yellow, I also love asymmetry. The alignment of the 22 canvases makes an asymmetrical grid that has allowed me to map out my painting better and notes my passion for mathematics, geometry, and the art of design. I have used only primary colors and created secondary colors mixed with burnt umber and white to add shade, tone, and tints to my primary colors.

The painting consists of numerous collaged self-portraits painted across all 22 canvases, changing colors with nearly every edge of each canvas. It reflects on my journey at FIT, where each image of myself is from an important part of my life from 2020 to 2024. I have painted myself with various expressions, such as anger, happiness, sadness, confusion, and disgust.
