KAMYA HANNAH

KAMYA HANNAH

Kamya Hannah, a Bronx native, is an artist who creates works exploring her own femininity and the meaningful connections that she’s created in her life. Kamya makes a dreamy world of her own, full of nostalgia by using a limited palette of pinks and reds. She is influenced by the fashion tastes of the Y2K era and the Harajuku subculture. Kamya bounces back between themes of motherhood, physical connections and rebirth while using her heart motifs within her works.

Artist Statement

My thesis consists of exploring my own femininity and how I choose to represent myself. I like to tease the boundary of girlhood and womanhood using heart motifs and popular aesthetics from the early 2000s. I love engaging in the fashion world and incorporating bits of it into my works. Using the human heart as a physical representation of both love and pain is a fun symbol I like to incorporate into my artworks. I love bedazzling my works and attaching delicate pieces to my work. I think of decorating them like how I would decorate my face, how I would decorate my body. Lace, glitter, charms, gold, diamonds, scratches, beauty marks. My works are bittersweet – I like to highlight both the good and bad things when it comes to being a woman. I mainly use a palette of reds and pinks because pink is my favorite color. It’s a color that makes me happy and I love to immerse myself in it.
